  In 1877 Carl travelled to Paris for the first time and in 1881 he joined the Scandinavian artists’ colony in Gr?z-sur-Loing where he started painting in watercolours and met Karin. In 1888 Carl och Karin acquired Lilla Hyttn?s from Karin’s father. They moved there in 1891. The paintings of their home quickly became popular and reached a wide public. In 1896 Carl adorned the National Museum with large frescoes, but in 1911 his sketches for Midvinterblot were refused. Over eighty years later, in1992, Midvinterblot finally took its place in The National Museum.

 

1차 세계대전 당시 많은 참전 군인들이 구약성서와 함께 간직했을 정도로 그의 책은 많은 사랑을 받았으며,
 그만의 독특한 스카디나비아식 디자인과 표현으로스웨덴 문화를 전 세계에 유행시킨 스웨덴의 국민화가다.
